Although the ‘runaway’

even celebrities to its doors.
In 2004, Gretna Green marked the 250th anniversary
of the 1754 Marriage Act. To commemorate the event,
the local community celebrated the occasion with a
variety of activities throughout the year – including a
reenactment on the anniversary date where locals
dressed up in period costume and acted out famous
events from Gretna Green’s history.
Since 2014, when the Scottish Parliament passed the
Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill, the Blacksmith’s
Shop has also played host to same-sex couples looking
to get married, whether it’s just the two of them or with
a small, select group of friends and family.
Hotels, like the award-winning Smiths at Gretna
Green, mean there’s plenty of room for a stylish
celebration after the ceremony – and the gorgeous green
hills of Scotland make for a romantic honeymoon. It’s the
perfect place for those looking for something a little bit
different – but without sacrificing the romance!
