WITH INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL BECOMING EASIER with
each passing year, don’t feel as though you’ve got to stay
local. Destination weddings are increasingly popular – and
when you’ve had an August of non-stop heavy showers,
you can see why!
PWM has featured several wedding destinations that
all offer something different – from the hot springs and
stark landscapes of Iceland, to the sun-drenched beaches
of Greece, Italy and Spain. This issue, we’re giving you a
taste of two different, and equally popular, elopement
spots – Gretna Green and Las Vegas. There’s something
really romantic about running away together to tie the
knot – and it’ll be forgiving on the old wallet, too!
When planning a destination wedding, it’s important
to think of the guest list. Will it be just the two of you? Will
you be inviting family? If so, remember to send out invites
nice and early – it’ll be make it easier on guests to save up,
and book earlier flights and hotels for cheaper rates.
Location, Location, Location
WITHOUT THE LONGSTANDING TRADITION of church
weddings, same-sex couples have been able to turn a
discerning eye to where they hold their celebrations, and
often go off the beaten track when it comes to their
wedding venue.
In the UK at least, there are certain legal requirements
for the actual ceremony – it must be conducted by an
authorised celebrant or registrar, be witnessed by two
adults, and take place in a licensed venue.
Many venues that hold weddings are licensed – but
even if not, you can always decant your party from the
local city hall to a venue as wild, whacky or wonderful as
you want. Good things to keep in mind are – how many
guests are you inviting, and how many guests does your
dream venue allow? Can guests get home easily, or is there
local accommodation that they can take advantage of?
custom, not must-om
FEEL FREE TO PLAY ABOUT with those old wedding
institutions – the bridal party, tossing the bouquet, the
wedding procession. Just because it’s what’s ‘usually done’
doesn’t mean that you have to do it.
You could walk each other down the aisle, rather than
be escorted by parents, or try a sand-mixing ceremony after
you’ve said your vows. Does one of you have a talent? Why
not delight your new spouse – and guests! – with a dazzling
rendition of a song or a choreographed first dance?
