I
t’s a relatively recent freedom for same-sex couples
to get married legally, and in many places across the
globe, marriage equality is still very much a work-in-
progress. Nonetheless, as same-sex couples were
often excluded from the usual marriage traditions,
many have taken the opportunity to step outside the
barriers of conventional wedding trends and take their
nuptials to whole new levels.
Many gay couples are foregoing old traditions – like
formal proposals, engagement rings and wedding parties –
and inventing a set of new ones. After years of fighting for
the same rights as heterosexual couples, gay couples are
redefining what it means to get married – and making it
personal to them.
So there you have it… anything goes! Your wedding is
your time to shine – to express to your families and friends
who you are as a couple and your love for each other. In the
end, the sky (and maybe, the budget) really is the limit.
Dream themes
DON’T BE AFRAID TO EXPRESS YOUR PERSONALITIES – if it’s
your dream to have a
Lord of the Rings
wedding, then get
out those elf ears and wizard hat! But for those looking for
something a little less quirky, era-themed weddings make
for some fabulous photographs.
You can either go all out and request that guests come
dressed for the occasion, or simply add some subtle,
sophisticated touches as a nod to the era you’re aiming at.
A good place to start is the venue, which often dictates the
style and atmosphere of the day – and then you can work
your way out with the details.
Dress to impress
WHITE DRESSES, SMART SUITS – we all know the deal
when it comes to traditional wedding threads. Sometimes
it’s fun to dress to the nines and strut your stuff, but don’t
be constrained by formal wedding dress codes.
Several things can dictate your outfits – a wedding
theme, the location, the time of year, or even just a
preference for a certain style or colour. The most important
thing is that you feel gorgeous, you feel comfortable, and
you feel like yourself.
What’s in a name?
THE OLD NAME CHANGE CONUNDRUM. As tradition goes,
a newly wedded woman takes the name of her new
husband – but some couples are choosing not to stick to
this custom, and same-sex newlyweds in particular have
the luxury of choice.
If you can’t agree on whose name to take, and don’t
want to keep your own, there are a number of options
open to you. Some couples choose to take a new name
entirely, while others create something out of a
combination of their surnames – PWM’s own Fonda Cox
joined his surname with his husband’s, and together
