a
part from the bride and groom (or groom
and groom, in our case) everything about
a wedding has been done before – that’s
prety much how we felt about the whole
occasion. We stll wanted to make it
special, of course, and even now – coming up to five
years on from our big day – the one truly unique thing
that was special about ours was our first dance.
Plenty of people have had choreographed first
dances, but no one has had our moves to our song! We
had been to plenty of straight weddings and stood
politely bored watching the new bride hang
disappointedly off her even more awkwardly dancing
beau as they both swayed badly to snow Patrol.
While everyone coming to our wedding obviously
knew it was a gay wedding, we thought making them
watch two guys doing that would be even worse. and
who the hell should lead..?
so we sought expert advice when we met sam
Jennings at a wedding fayre. When we shyly sidled up
and asked ‘can you help us?’ sam took a deep intake of
breath, followed by a litle bounce and a camp clap,
proclaiming, ‘i knew this day would come. You’ll be my
first – i can’t wait!’
Our song was
Collide
by Howie day, a seemingly
slow song, but with a four-step beat (according to
sam!). she designed a dance for us with neither of us
being the leader or follower and showed us through
the steps with great patence and humour. in fact
learning it was hysterically good fun.
While almost every aspect of the wedding
involved us thinking about other people’s likes and
dislikes, tempering costs, and worrying about whether
‘this or that’ was worth doing at all, every moment we
spent learning and practising our dance were times
when sacha and i were truly together, spending
quality time laughing. it was purely about us... and
worth every penny.
