Lou & CharLie
from Ceinwen Roberts. We chose mostly classical music
but Ceinwen played
Kissing You
by Des’ree, as we walked
down the aisle.
Many of the guests had no idea what to expect. Few, if
any, had been to a civil partnership ceremony before and
many had never been to any sort of civil ceremony, gay or
straight – I think some had feared the ceremony would be
a bit sterile.
However, this wasn’t the case and the ceremony in
particular received a lot of compliments; many guests
came up to us to say how beautiful and romantic it was,
with the Great Hall looking magnificent, the readings well
chosen and the harpist – as well as the two brides looking
beautiful! The wedding cake, from Choccywoccydoodah,
also went down very well.
It was lovely to see all our family and friends together.
The high point for me was how beautiful Charlie looked
when I saw her in her dress for the first time.
The best advice we can offer to other couples is to be
yourself – don’t feel like you have to live up to any stereotypes
and don’t get stressed out by timeframes. We arranged our
big day in five months and it was more than enough time.
UPDATE FROM THE COUPLE…
At 19:05 on 29 December 2012 our beautiful daughter
Bridget Frieda was born. We’d never considered not having
children, and were delighted the moment we discovered
that Charlie was pregnant. We read up on several options
beforehand, but wanted to try donor insemination first. We
chose a clinic that we felt comfortable with (Manchester
Fertility Clinic), and discussed it with them in more detail.
Getting pregnant was the most difficult part of the
whole process – the odds of it happening through donor
insemination are low and the process can be very uncertain.
Getting pregnant can be really draining (I imagine going
through the adoption process is just as hard), and our advice
to other couples thinking of having children is that, while the
rewards are worth everything andmore, you need a really
strong relationship to help you get through the difficult
period when you are trying. You need tomentally prepare
yourself that it may not always happen as fast as you wish.
All our family, friends and work colleagues have been
very supportive. Everyone is really pleased for us – and we
are, of course, ecstatic!
