e met at Newcastle University in
October 2000. Although we were doing
different degrees, we had some of the
same modules. The class we met in
was called the Bible and Literature...
perhaps an unusual place to meet your future partner!
I kind of proposed while we were on holiday in
Dubrovnik in May 2012 – it was sort of spontaneous and
spur-of-the-moment. Charlie said that she didn’t like the
idea of a ‘civil partnership’ and that we should wait until
weddings were legal. The next day she changed her mind –
I think the sun and setting had tipped the balance.
I don’t think we were ever going to be anything other
than very classic and traditional. We never really discussed
it, it was just very natural. There wasn’t a set ‘style’ or
colour scheme
per se
.
We had visited the venue the year before. We’d been
visiting an English Heritage site in our local area in
Cheshire and had seen the turrets of Peckforton Castle in
the distance and decided to go and explore. Although
neither of us said anything at the time, we both
immediately felt that if we ever decided to take the plunge
this would be the place. In particular, we both fell in love
with the Great Hall. Although neither of us is religious, we
are quite traditional, and the similarity between the Great
Hall and an old fashioned chapel made it perfect for us.
The Castle is beautiful and didn’t need much additional
adornment. We kept it simple with lots of candles, and
wonderful flowers from the Flower Shop in Tarporley.
I wore a D’zage dress from Bellissima Brides and
Charlie wore a Tiffany Rose dress. Both were simple,
elegant and classic. We both did our own make-up and I
styled my own hair. Charlie went to a local hairdresser.
We didn’t write our own vows, but did spend a long
time choosing three readings. They were
A marriage
by
Mark Twain,
At a window
by Carl Sandburg and an extract
from
Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens.
Both Charlie and I were walked down the aisle by our
fathers. We had two best men. The ceremony and
champagne were enhanced by wonderful harp music
