How to wear it
always, feel free to explore and express
yourself. It is, a er all, your day.
Gowns and dresses
There’s a myriad of styles in the
wedding dress world, but some
obviously cater better to certain body
types. here’s a brief run-down of your
general options that will hold true for
wedding-specific frocks, or be equally
relevant to choosing a non-white dress.
Ballgown
:
With a full skirt, tight waist,
and usually traditional bodice, this
dress can overwhelm a tiny stature, but
comes with a lot of drama!
A-Line
:
A skirt cut that looks great on
everyone, the A-line bridal gown is a
classic. This is hands-down the most
versatile option for all body types.
Dropped Waist or mermaid
:
excellent
for showing off your figure, the
elongated bodice of this gown
highlights curves. If you’re shy about
your bottom or your waist, this isn’t the
time to be daring.
Empire
:
ethereal and sweeping, this is a
lovely option to hide any waistline
woes, but also creates a vision of
timelessness. Beautiful most especially
on taller frames, but very pretty if done
in light materials for the petite, this is
an exquisite choice.
Sheath
:
Usually seen at warm weather
or beachside affairs, this simple
silhouette is elegantly clean. Generally
great on all bodies, it can be decked out
with lots of accessories.
Tuxedos and suits
The beauty of the clean-cut tux or suit is
that it looks amazing on both men and
women, and can be accessorised
perfectly with canes, a top hat, fabulous
cufflinks, colourful shirts, ties, cravats,
and pocket scarves. You can go classic,
vintage, modern or throw together a bit
of steampunk, and you’ll look both
amazing and stylishly yourself.
Original tux
:
Made of wool, officially,
and with contrasting lapels, tuxes are
usually black in colour, and traditionally
paired with white or ivory tuxedo shirts.
You can of course spice it up and make
it less formal with more colour. Be sure
it is sewn or tailored to fit your waist
and across your bottom without
puckering, and that the pant length hits
below your shoe heel line.
Suit
:
A less formal option than the tux,
suits can be any colour, and you may
have the choice of a vest or
cummerbund as well here. These are
o en not wool, and can be worn with
any coloured shirt and accessories. You
may also have a choice of the number
of jacket buttons. The same tailoring
rules apply, and if you must hire, be
sure you get proper measurements
done before ordering your items.
Informal
:
While you may not be wearing
Bermuda shorts and a white shirt for
your nuptials (though some people do!)
you can go ultra casual and still look
smashing. The go-to are the khaki shorts
or pants paired with some sort of
button-down shirt in white, ivory, or
colour. Because this is usually not hired
clothing, you can make sure you find a fit
that matches your daily wear, so that
you both feel and look comfortable.
Whether you choose a gown, a suit, or
your own ensemble that is so purely
your own look, as long as you feel
great and know you are representing
yourself in your clothing, that will
shine through and make you glow
throughout the entire day.
