inding a good venue is top of most couples’ to-do
list, but selecting somewhere that stands out
from the rest is easier said than done. Long gone
are the days of a simple hotel buffet – now
weddings rarely come without elaborate planning
and attention to detail, with an emphasis on personality and
an original slant. It’s becoming harder to find somewhere

In scenic north Wales, nestling in the foothills of the
stunning Clwydian range stands five-star Pentre Mawr
Country House, just an hour from the metropolises of

venue – an 18th-century manor house, where you can
marry in an authentic African safari lodge and then sleep

Pentre has been in the same family for more than four
hundred years, but that’s where the stuffiness ends.
Hoteliers by trade, a complete refurbishment by the latest
custodians – Graham, whose family home it is, and Bre, his
wife – has seen many innovative changes.
Every room, suite or lodge offers something different.
Of course they’re all ensuite and have the usual hospitality
trays – but with little extras like Nespresso coffee machines.
Every lodge and suite has a private terrace with a hot tub,
and every room has a huge spa bath (big enough for two!)
Romantic touches like candles are the order of the day,
and TripAdvisor reviews give an idea of the sort of hospitality
couples can expect. You’ll get the warmest of welcomes – the
kettle’s always on, though a glass of Bucks Fizz is a welcome
sight on a summer’s day and mulled wine warms the cockles
in winter. Nothing is too much trouble for them – and as
Graham says, ‘if it’s legal and we can physically do it… the
answer is yes!’ The main thing they convey is that it’s your
country house for your wedding – they’re just there to help.

no corkage – and they only have ‘exclusive use’ weddings,
