uring my childhood I made lots of lovely cakes
with my mum and then in later years I started
to create celebration cakes for family and
friends. I was completely self-taught as I found
that learning in classes moved too slowly for me and I just
craved to learn new skills.
In April 2009 as a result of
redundancy from a full-time job as an
account manager and print buyer,
Sweetness & Delight Wedding Cakes
was born. Since then we have gone
from strength to strength. We were
shortlisted for the 2012 Wedding
Industry Awards for the South East
and London Region, received an award
in the Ice the Cake Incredible Awards
2012 and we also became an official Partner for the MOBO
2012 Awards, supplying cakes to the performing artistes.
The chances are your cake is going to be the centrepiece
of your wedding reception – apart from the two of you, of
course! – so make it stand out. Your cake can be traditional,
modern or even quirky. It can come in any shape or size and
can match the theme or colour scheme of your big day. It
can even reflect your personalities and interests; this year 4
May falls on a Saturday and this has led to Star Wars
themed weddings – May the force (fourth) be with you!
If your theme is a brightly coloured one, then this funky
flower cake could be the perfect design for you. The flower
shapes could be changed to an alternative such as hearts,
stars or even a combination.
The concept came about when I was asked to design
and create a wedding cake for a neon-themed photo shoot
that was being organised by Ice the Cake
(www.icethecake.co.uk). All the design brief consisted of
was that it had to be brightly coloured – the rest was up to
me. How on earth could I resist the opportunity with such a
fantastic theme and having been given a loose rein to
incorporate the colours into the cake?
I spent a number of days putting lots of ideas together
and came up with this very colourful and fun design. I then
had the idea of making the cake with a bright rainbow
sponge inside, which was a zesty lemon flavour. No one else
knew that I had done this until the cake was cut during the
shoot, which led to an amazing and very satisfying reaction!
Since creating this cake it has become very much a part

of Sweetness & Delight and has followed us to all the
wedding events that we have participated in, becoming one
of our signature pieces. Even more exciting is how popular
the design has been, especially with our gay couples, and as
a result we have recreated and adapted the design on
several occasions.
With the changes to the law and gay marriage we’re
really looking forward to creating many more wedding
cakes for these very special occasions!
