wanted during the day. Being in central london, it was also
within spitting distance of the Palace of Westminster, so it was
something of a political statement as well!
There were more political undercurrents to the day. (We
had already joked about actually inviting Theresa may!) at first
i was conscious that this was a civil ceremony, but then made a
decision to have the words ‘wedding’ and ‘marriage’ on all of
our stationery. We were also interviewed by a French TV
station – they had approached our Westminster registrar
looking for a couple – as our wedding coincided with the
introduction of law allowing gay marriage in France.

We wanted to go formal for the wedding, so started shopping
for morning suits. But then we realised that we wouldn’t wear
them enough to justify buying them – besides, if we hired
them then we would have our ‘something borrowed’ for the
day! So we had silver waistcoats made for us, bought purple
cravats and handkerchiefs, and hired the jackets, trousers and
top hats. We also bought a change of clothes for the evening,
and outfits for the page boys and our mothers, all from regular
high street stores.

the internet but were overwhelmed by the responses and
trying to work out whether they would be any good. at a
wedding show we were introduced to Graham and that
personal contact made all the difference – he was friendly,
accommodating and a very good photographer.
our button holes, in our theme colours, were different for
each of us. Camilo wore a purple orchid, while mine incorporated
purple heather and thistle reflecting my mother’s Scottish origins.
Camilo also likes hydrangeas very much, so these featured pro-
minently in the larger arrangements and in the table flowers.
We had some difficulty at first when trying to come up with
table names as we needed 11 of them, and wanted them to be
meaningful. in the end we decided on well-known london
monuments and spent some time going around london while
Camilo took photos of the places we were going to use, which
our stationer converted into beautiful table-name cards.
