PWMAG:
What made you start blogging in the first place?
KAT:
My story isn’t so different to that of many people
who get into the wedding industry. I started my blog
when I was planning my own wedding to Gareth in 2007.
At the time I didn’t even consider this could become a
career – I simply wanted a place to collate all my
wedding ideas and inspiration.
During my planning I discovered American wedding
blogs – there didn’t seem to be any in the UK at this
time. I loved the instant nature of blogging; how you
could comment and feel part of a community. I wanted
to be a part of that. I also loved writing – I always have –
but I guess I just never found my subject until I was
engaged! I found writing about weddings exciting and
finding wedding inspiration that was off the beaten
track, so to speak, was just brilliant. I just wanted to
share my findings with others.
After our wedding was over I didn’t want to give up
weddings or blogging so I decided to morph my blog
into a place for alternative wedding inspiration.
Although I loved the wedding blogs I’d found
throughout my plans, none of them catered to
the specific kind of bride or style of wedding that
I wanted – the alternative, the offbeat and the
rock ’n‘ roll.
PWMAG:
What attracted you to
alternative weddings?
KAT:
I've always been a bit of an odd-bod
and interested in things that weren't
conventional. I wouldn't say I'm the
most crazy-alternative chick out
there, but I know what I like and it’s
generally not what you see
represented in the mainstream
media. I approached planning our
wedding in the same way; it was
really just a natural progression. I
didn't want to have a wedding that
anyone else would have, and so
when it came to writing my blog I
didn’t want a wedding blog that
was exactly the same as all the
others. Being so different has
actually really helped me stand out in the crowd. There
are so many wedding blogs these days!
PWMAG:
What do you think makes a wedding
‘alternative’?
KAT:
An ‘alternative’ wedding is basically a wedding that
is planned with the couple in mind – they pick things
because they love them and they represent them and
their love, not because some wedding magazine told
them it was the latest trend.
PWMAG:
What do you look for when deciding which
couples to blog?
KAT:
I look for great photography and styling ideas that I
haven't seen over and over again.
PWMAG:
What did you like about your favourite
weddings?
KAT:
Picking a favourite wedding is like
choosing a favourite child! It's so
difficult. But it’s just as difficult to pick
a few favourite details because all
the weddings I blog are so
different. I’m quite loving
feathers, taxidermy and
anything a little bit creepy at
the moment though...
PWMAG:
And how should
couples manage reactions
from guests who might
not get the
‘alternative’ thing?
KAT:
Ignore them.
it’s not their
wedding, it’s
yours! Do your
own thing and
don't be afraid to
put your own
stamp on your day.
