AlmA And GilliAn
W
e met each other through
work. We’re both in the
healthcare branch of the
Canadian military, and met on
a field training course. We knew from the
start that we would get married. Alma put
an engagement ring on a pumpkin stem for
me to find when we went out picking
pumpkins in the autumn. We decided on an
intimate destination wedding to minimise
the stress of planning and to keep the
wedding focused on the real purpose – our
commitment to each other.
We bought our dresses together in
Chicago. A lot of people think it’s strange
that we went dress shopping together, but
whose opinion should matter more than
your fiancée’s?
We had a traditional mayan ceremony,
led by a shaman, on the beach at iberostar
Grand Paraiso in mayan Riveria, mexico. it
was perfect. We had only four guests. my
mom walked Alma down the aisle and my
dad walked me. We all came down the aisle
at the same time and met at the altar. The
entire ceremony involved participation from
our guests, who stood at the altar with us –
it was very interactive.
We did photos after our ceremony, and
our guests headed to the bar! After the
Alma and Gillian chose
sun, sea and sand and
had the day of their
dreams in Mexico.
Gillian tells their story.
