always been intrigued by what it was really like, and there
were some photographs of a wedding there that made it
look idyllic, so we sent them an email to see if they did civil
partnerships.
the ceremony was conducted by a registrar from
Haddington in the great hall drawing room of the castle. We
wrote our own vows and exchanged rings in front of our
‘best women’.
We had tried to keep everything on a small scale so
there were around 35 guests, and the flowers and
decorations were all locally sourced. a er the ceremony
came photographs and canapés on the lawn in front of the
castle – my cousin, Christian elder, kindly did our
photography as a wedding present. the weather was
blustery and a mixture of strong sun and storm clouds made
for some very striking and beautiful images.
the wedding breakfast was held in the basement
undercroft with food that was also locally sourced,
including a seafood salad, local lamb and rhubarb and
lemon pavlovas. after the meal was over, a further 20
guests joined us for the ceilidh in the undercroft. It was
cramped but a huge amount of fun!
several of our guests said it was the best wedding they
had ever been to. the food, the venue, the professionalism
of the staff and of course the company, made it the most
cosy, intimate but sophisticated wedding any of our guests
(or indeed us) had ever been to.
For us, the high point of the day was the setting of the
wedding, hands down. alan and the team at Fenton tower
pulled out all the stops to produce a seamless programme
from start to finish, but were so unobtrusive it really felt as if
we owned the castle – for at least 24 hours anyway. For us, it
was totally magical and the perfect place to hold our big day.
