discover the hidden gems of the area. Not only are you taken
in a luxury vehicle to places of significant interest, but also
during your excursions Alasdair will point out to you all the
little things that you would otherwise miss, with anecdotes
that he has collected over the years.
It is a similar story as far as the wines are concerned.
Guests on the Saint Louis are fascinated to learn about the
wine areas, and the wine history, of the little-known places
such as Fronton, Buzet, Saint Sardos and Côtes de Brulhois.
Largely, these are artisan producers, making wines that are
undiscovered by the majority of wine enthusiasts. These wine
areas are very much in their ascendency, and many top award-
winning wines are carried on the Saint Louis.
The boat itself is a classic dutch barge, built over 80 years
ago and converted quite recently to provide a luxurious
holiday base. The Saint Louis is head-turning, and guests feel
proud that they are travelling on the finest boat on these
waters! Of course the boat has air conditioning and central
heating, and each cabin can be with either twin beds or a
queen-sized double.
The theme of these cruises is particularly one of relaxation
and fulfilment. Each guest is able to enjoy each day just as he
or she chooses. If you wish to take a walk or a cycle-ride along
the canal towpath before lunch, or spend an a ernoon
relaxing on the sun-deck with a glass in one hand and a book
in the other – well, that is up to you! This is by far the finest
way of travelling on the canals, and the best way of visiting
and exploring this special corner of France.

If you take a journey from Montauban,
heading west towards the Atlantic
Ocean, you will travel through a very
special corner of France.
On either side of the rivers Tarn and Garonne, there are
orchards of fruit trees and fields of sunflowers, and in the
rolling countryside on either side of the valley you will find
wheat fields, hazelnut farms, and ancient vineyards dating back
to Roman times. You will also find medieval villages and
chateaux, with a long history of the turbulent times of the past.
It is in this hidden corner of France that Scots couple
Alasdair and Barbara Wyllie operate their luxury hotel barge,
the Saint Louis. They provide week-long cruises for up to six
guests, travelling peacefully on the canal system through this
wonderful rural countryside.
Everything is catered for – these are cruises where guests
really are pampered, with a crew of four and a theme phrase of
‘Elegant, Enchanting, Exclusive’. All meals are provided, with
Barbara cra ing the finest of local ingredients into superb meals
of international standard. The Saint Louis specialises in wines
from the region of South West France, with over 40 carefully
selected wines carried on board. There is an open bar, well
stocked with everything you could imagine including a speciality
range of single malt whiskies. The cruises include daily
excursions to a wide range of places that are of particular
interest to the guests on board, as each cruise itinerary is
tailored to the interests and wishes of those particular guests.
It would be impossible for an independent traveller to
discover the wealth of places of interest all by him or herself.
All the visits from the Saint Louis are carefully researched and
tested by Alasdair and Barbara, and through them you can
