EVERY WEDDING
that we photograph is such a special
occasion for us to be a part of, but photographing a same-
sex wedding was a first for Silk Wedding Photography.
Having the pleasure of photographing Mark and Darren’s
big day was a unique opportunity for us to start branching
out within our work.
Mark and Darren are one of the sweetest couples you could meet. It
was clear to us on first meeting them that they have a lot of love for one
another and that to finally tie the knot marked a huge milestone in their
relationship.
‘We clicked as soon as we met,’ they told us. ‘We eventually started to
talk about having a wedding, as couples do. We got engaged the
following Christmas and the rest is history.’
Both were filled with nerves and excitement as they got ready,
preparing to make their vows to each other. One detail that stood out
while photographing at this point were the cufflinks; a sweet little
personal touch that they shared.
‘The cufflinks were an idea that Mark thought of,’ said Darren. ‘He
wanted an item of clothing for us both that was unique and symbolised
each of us, while being something we could keep as a memento of the
big day. Mark has a crab as his star sign is Cancer, and with me being a

and Lego fan, mine is a Lego lightsaber. My best man had
a stethoscope, as he’s a paramedic.’
Mark and Darren arrived at the venue in style, each having a classic
vintage Rolls Royce, travelling with their best man and best woman,
something Mark really wanted for his wedding day.
The wedding was held at the grand Highbury Hall in Moseley. The
interior had been decorated with the running theme of red and black to
match their cravats and buttonholes. The top table held a special place
for their parents – the people that Mark and Darren would have been
proud to celebrate their day with.
‘We knew that our parents would be mentioned in the speeches as a
matter of etiquette about loved ones not being able to be there, and we
were aware that some people at the wedding never had the chance to
meet Andrew (Mark’s Dad) and my parents, Janet and Brian,’ said Darren.
‘We decided to place pictures on the top table with place name cards, as
it would allow people to put a face to the names mentioned in the
speeches. We had them set on the top table, accompanied by a lily to
symbolise them not being with us.’
After a beautiful ceremony, we all descended to the garden for photos.
Guests lined up with large champagne style bottles of confetti that
showered Mark and Darren with an array of colours as they walked passed
them. The whole day was full of fun, colour and love, and we, Silk Wedding
Photography, had the pleasure of capturing every detail of it.
