AheAd of the curve
Back in 2001, the Netherlands made history by becoming
the first country to legalise same-sex marriage. the
marriage bill passed the house of representa ves by 109
votes to 33, with the Senate approving it on 19 december
2000. Making it official, the mayor of Amsterdam, Job
cohen, officiated a ceremony for four couples just after
midnight on 1 April 2001.
Although the law in the Netherlands restricts same-
sex marriage to dutch ci zens only, this historic milestone
paved the way for countries across the world to follow suit.
