While all of this unfolds there are a few matters we need to
address, and we hope we can seek your help one day with more
campaigns. Many of our opposite sex friends are able to travel the
world and get married, but did you know that we still only have a small
handful of places? Most countries in the eU have restrictions that stop
couples from travelling there to get married. The Usa does not permit
anyone from the UK to enter and marry unless they are connected to the
Usa legally, with new york being the only state that is ‘open to all’. It still
shocks me, and I wonder how much work is in front of us to change this.
Did you know that new york, south africa, Canada, gran Canaria (but
soon to close its doors) and all UK embassies around the globe are only a
handful of places you can travel to, to legally get married. of course there
is more to what I have stated but the raw facts speak for themselves. I trust
you agree it’s a disgrace and only shows we still have a long way to go.
since the introduction of civil partnerships here, the UK has been one
of the most looked to, controversial and modern countries in the world by
offering such variation and an ‘open to all’ attitude. This is no small feat
and makes us a groundbreaking country when it comes to the debates
that matter and changes in history – changes that can and will
benefit all. and the world is still looking on, which is amazing.
so here we are, ten years on, emerging through a whirlwind
of ups and downs. The course of history has been changed and
we’re honoured to be part of it in so many ways. It just leaves us
to say thank you to everyone that has helped us fight the fight,
and supported us through our shows, events and online. you’ve
been there when we needed you, signed petitions and helped us
to help you. We should all raise a glass and say ‘well done – we
got this far’ – and there is so much more to come. We should all
be proud; I know I am, being in a civil partnership with one of the
greatest guys I have ever met, a soul mate and friend – my Mike.
