Walking into the recepton room for the first
tme as a married couple was just great – the tables
looked exactly as we’d imagined them, each with a
blue vase of white orchids with splashes of pink.
We’d named our tables afer places that had
special meaning to us and included a litle card to
explain to our guests why we’d picked it.
Our favours were chocolates for all the adults and
a pirate kit for the kids. We opted for a cupcake tower
(100 baked by a friend with a big kitchen!) which
consisted of a mix of red velvet, vanilla and chocolate
cupcakes from the Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook.
The UK and US was a theme
throughout the wedding – from our
invites and place setngs that
featured the skylines of London
and NYC, to the afer-dinner treat
of s’mores (a real American
summer camp traditon) which saw
all our US guests coaching our UK
and Irish contngent in the delicate
art of marshmallow toastng!
Sue is a wedding photographer, so we knew we
wanted to do something a litle bit special for the
photos. Our soluton was to create our very own
‘wedding wall’, complete with the wedding
portraits of our parents and grandparents. The wall
held the seatng plans, but afer dinner it was
Kerry and Sue
transformed into a photo-booth style wall. It was a
great prop to encourage photos, and was a real hit!
The whole night ended with a lot of partying – we’d
asked everyone to request their favourite song with
their rSVP – so people didn’t stop dancing.
The staff at The George went out of their way to
make sure we had a really special event – and we
enjoyed it so much. If we could have a wedding every
week we would! The day was great fun. ‘Traditonal’
just isn’t us – but friends and laughter definitely are.
Since our wedding we’ve setled in the uK, but a
move to the uS would be something we’d like the
opton to have – Sue is very far away from her family.
But currently uS law does not recognise same sex
marriages – so I would be unable to get a visa. It’s a
shame as so many people don’t realise this
inequality exists – there are a few states that permit
same-sex marriage, but on a federal level it’s not
recognised. a few recent court cases have been
brought in the uS to challenge this and the ‘unitng
american Families act’ has been introduced for
debate – so we’re watching it closely!
The past two years have flown by, but we’re
lucky that our growing wedding photography
business allows us to share other couples’ happiest
day with them – and it’s helped me by not requiring
me to go cold turkey on the wedding magazines!
