Phil’s tips for a
stylish city do
WINTER COOL…
Consider a wedding in the
colder months. In the city you probably
won’t get much outside space anyway, so
enjoy being inside, as well as the delights
of seeing the city lit up at night, which you
won’t get to appreciate when the sun is
setting at 9pm in the summer.
LESS IS MORE…
Keep your theme simple
and modern – add a nod to classical taste
but in a restrained, updated way. The city
is a suave place where luxury is not
necessarily ostentatious, but don’t forget
it has a wealth of history despite the
modern exterior. Take the best of both,
and you will have a truly unique day.
Things like good quality traditionally
printed invitations but with a modern
typeface straddle both values.
STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF…
Don’t let the
city theme make you become too adult or
too conservative. It would have been so
easy to exclude children from the day
because of the venue, but having them
around made it a really vibrant event.
Also, try to put in your personal touches.
It’s easy to have suppliers make
suggestions that have worked before for
them, but only do it if it suits you. Many
will know these venues more as
corporate function rooms, and it is
important to avoid it feeling like that.
PRIORITISE YOUR BUDGET…
Don’t sell
any aspect short. Though I wanted to
keep the cost down, there were lots of
parts that had to be of a decent quality,
such as the flowers and lighting, to
match the venue. Balance the spend – if
the cost of the venue is taking the lion’s
share of your budget, you might find you
cannot do all the other things you want
to. And last but not least:
SAVOUR THE DAY…
Take a moment
together every hour or so to step back
and observe and absorb the day – or it’ll
be over and you’ll have missed the lot.
