We may be Well into spring
, but most of us stll have a
litle bit of extra festve poundage to work off. if you have a 2012
wedding on the horizon and are fed up of playing the ‘will i or
won’t i go to the gym’ game a er work every day, why not try
Zumba – the fitness craze that’s been taking the world by storm.
so, what is Zumba? it’s a Latn-inspired dance and aerobic
fitness programme, blending internatonal music and upbeat
steps. it might seem a litle intmidatng at first, especially to
those who have two le feet, but Zumba has classes for all skill
levels and, most importantly, is geared towards having fun.
essentally, it consists of a few basic ingredients mixed
together to create a fast-paced and excitng exercise regime:
reggaeton
is a style of music influenced by hip-hop and Latn
music, with choreography involving pushing your hip out to the
side, and making a rocking and stomping moton with your feet.
salsa
is a Latn music and step rhythm dance, which has
partcipants taking steps from side to side and winding their hips.
merengue
is a Dominican music and dance style similar to a
march, which becomes more elaborate as you add in hip and
armmovements.
Cumbia
is Columbian in origin with steps that are, basically,
one foot front, while the other foot steps in place. For each foot
that comes forward and back, a hip moton is also added.
if you want to try giving your energy levels a boost, you can find a
local class at www.zumba.com – or,
if you’re more of a wallflower and
want to try the steps in private first,
you can always Zumba in the
comfort of your own home on a
gaming console.
