Revitalise your body in time for the summer with these top tips for looking good
To tan or not to tan?
You want a healthy glowwithout looking like an
Oompa Loompa. Should you take the plunge?
Plan a tanning schedule, taking account of your skin type.
Unless you tan really easily, avoid tanning booths and sunbeds
– it’s not worth risking long-term damage for just one day.
Many tanning salons now offer spray tanning booths and
hand-held systems. Have a trial session a month before the big
day and your tan appointment about three days before. Look
for an accredited salon with fully qualified therapists. A good
one will discuss your lifestyle, what kind of treatment will suit
you best and what aftercare will be needed.
Before you visit, shower, exfoliate to get rid of any dead skin
cells and don’t wear perfume, deodorant
or any oily products. Afterwards, do
everything you can to hang on to your
colour – avoid long baths and showers and
don’t go swimming for a day or two.
If you want to build up your tan
yourself – and there are plenty of subtle
‘hint of colour’
creams and sprays
available now –
make sure your skin
is exfoliated and
well moisturised first.
Let the moisturiser
sink in before you get
tanning.
Make sure you
apply it evenly – little
and often is better
than slapping it on as
if you’re about to
swim the channel –
and pay attention to your elbows, knees and ankles. If you
overdo it, use a little baby oil to smooth over darker areas, and
use lemon juice or whitening toothpaste to remove stains from
your hands. (Or, with a bit of practice, use latex gloves or an
applicator mitt to avoid the telltale orange palms!) A buffing
mitt will help smooth away any colour build-up.
Wear loose dark clothing when you’ve finished – unless you
can wander around naked for a while! Keep up a routine of
gently exfoliating and moisturising, and top up your tan gently
when it begins to fade.
