ART
Miniature heroes
Creating a human world in miniature – it’s
a hobby that delights and fascinates for its
craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Penny Thomson
works with papier mâché
to sculpt the human figure, experimenting
with techniques and themes in miniature.
A past winner of the Doll House Award,
Penny models and carves to produce 1/12,
1/24 and 1/48 scaled forms. Her historical
and fictional characters – Henry VIII and
Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I and Jane Eyre –
are carefully observed and dressed in
tissue silk cotton and leather. Her
charming cameo scenes, which are set in
boxes or under domes, use ambient light
to catch the
painted
translucent
backgrounds. And
fantastical winged
creatures –
dragons, birds and
fairies – come to
life in a collection
of contemporary
automata.
Penny is happy to
take commissions so if you’ve got an idea
for an individual figure or a scene, she’ll
create it to your specifications – in perfect
miniature.

Sculpt your love
There’s no better way to capture an image of your loved one
than with a commissioned portrait sculpture. The three
dimensional and tactile qualities of a sculptural form are
irresistible, adding drama and interest to any room.
Jane Hamilton
specialises in
commissioned
portraits of subjects,
young and old. ‘Each
individual head is a
journey of discovery,’
she says. ‘Portraiture is
not just about getting
a likeness, it’s about
trying to capture the
essence of the
character.’ Jane also
sculpts animals,
although her main
interest is the human
form and she has been
particularly inspired
by time spent as a
child inWest Africa. ‘I
love the elegance, the sensuality and dignity that, for me, are
such an integral part of native African culture.’
As an exciting, unusual present, or as a romantic tribute to
your lover, an original sculpture is a great investment and an
object of beauty that will bring you pleasure and enjoyment
for life.
